Hi everyone! Exhuasted this week, so let’s keep it simple for Animation Night, and pick up a long-dangling thread…
Remember Animation Night 125, six weeks ago? We watched some works of the brilliant Peter Chung, notably among them Alexander Senki aka Reign the Conqueror, a telling of the story of Alexander the Great in an oddly sci-fi version of ancient Greece where philosophers are basically wizards, the Pythagoreans are a kind of ninja, and here’s a Diogenes:
Peter Chung worked as the character designer on this show, and the combination of Peter Chung and Madhouse under directors Rintaro and Yoshinori Kanemori gives some wildly inventive imagery.
Where we left off, Alexander and his gay buddies have just gone to war against Persia. After a battle which gives us such sights as this…
Alexander locked eyes with King Darius of Persia…
But the Pythagoreans attacked before they could duel, and Darius retreated, because…
Then we found out about a strange ritual performed by Alexanders mother! Wherever will this go next? Apparently it’s going to get much weirder in the second half - whether present in the light novels or original to the anime, I cannot say - so get ready~
